Salthill Devon -v- Athlone Town
by P.J. Murray
Fri, May 17 2013

SALTHILL DEVON

Salthill are still chasing their first win of the season, the Galway side are rooted to the bottom of the division with three draws. They almost recorded their first win in Athlone, but they surrendered a lead to only leave with a share of the spoils.

Two of Devon’s draws have come in Drom, they held their Galway rivals Mervue to a 0-0 draw on May 5th.

Only twice this season have Salthill been beaten by more than the odd goal, 2-1 scorelines are common for the Connacht side. One of those heavy defeats came in the last game as they lost 3-0 to Wexford Youths.

Confidence will be low in the Salthill camp, without a win and trailing Cobh by eight points it’s hard to see where the points will come from.

ATHLONE TOWN

Roddy Collins’ Athlone Town travel to Drom looking to put another win on the board after failing to take all three from Cobh last week.

Athlone are still very much in the hunt for promotion, but could rue dropped points. They were forced to come from behind and salvage a 3-3 draw when these sides met last.

Roddy Collins has only one injury worry, although it is a big one, as Philly Gorman is a doubt for Friday night’s game.

Consistency has been a real problem for Athlone, they have failed to put back-to-back wins this season, only once have they had two consecutive results and that was two draws.

Ryan Coombes has been a real revelation for Athlone, the midfielder has been the real spark in Roddy’s attack.

Referee: A Sherlock

MATCH STATS

In the 11 fixtures between the sides since Salthill entered the league in 2010 Athlone have six wins while Salthill Devon’s solitary win came at the end of the 2012 season when they scored three without reply in Drom. The remaining four fixtures all ended on score draws

Athlone have the second best goal tally in the league while Salthill have the worst defensive record

BETTING

Salthill Devon 4/1, Draw 5/2, Athlone Town 8/13

PREDICTION

Athlone should have too much for Salthill, 2-1 to Roddy’s side.
come on the town!!!!

Evening ladies and gents, congrats on the win.

I'm looking for an attendance estimate for tonight. Salthill Devon forum members weren't very talkative Smile

Thanks.

Im not even joking when i say there was no more than 70 at the game. Salthill had about 15 fans (which were probably committee members). The sooner they leave the league the better.

Salthill have claimed an official attendance of 194 for last night. Going by actual figures, as terrible as it is, an attendance of 70 actually raises their average for the season so far, from 57 to 59...

According to reports that are not from the club themselves, their highest attendance from their 6 home league matches so far, 75 (est) v Longford was their highest.

75 v Longford Town (No official figure)
45 v Wexford Youths (126)
65 v Cobh Ramblers (179)
47 v Waterford (119)
51 v Mervue (148)
70 v Athlone (194)

I'm gathering the info for Soccerway. Usually they would never accept anything but the official figure when it's available, but the fact that every independent estimate contradicts the official figure, either by a large percentage or a multiple of the actual figure, has meant that they don't want the official figure. You can't even say that season tickets are added, because the amount they have added to the actual attendance in each match has gone up and down like a see-saw.

According to them, the matches they actually gave a figure for, the average was 153. The real average was 55.

I don't know what they expect to achieve, but it's hilarious.

I don't know about that, but the average attendance for the First Division is 358. The average without the two Galway City based teams would be about 20% higher without them, at 446. Useless stat I know...
