Teams News for visit to Longford

By Chris on July 5, 2012

All roads lead to Flancare Park this weekend as Athlone Town make the short journey across county lines to take on local rivals and current league leaders Longford Town in the 3rd Midlands’ El Classico of this 2011 Airtricity League Division 1 season.

While all games between the two sides are important this one has the added edge with both teams pushing for promotion / play off places along with Limerick and Waterford. Last weekend both sides collected all three points against Galway based opposition with Longford coming back from 3-0 behind to score twice in added time to secure a 5-4 win against Mervue United in Fahys Field while Athlone on the other hand were 2-0 winners against SD Galway in Athlone Town Stadium.

Mike Kerley has yet to taste success during his reign as manager losing 5 of the 6 games played with the other ending in a 1-1 draw in Flancare Park. This season’s games were tight affairs with both finishing 2-1.

Injuries, suspensions, retirements and unavailability will all play a part in Mike Kerleys selection this week with Paul Danaher, Mark Walsh and Warren Conroy unavailable due to injury while Niall Scullion is considered very doubtful after picking up a foot injury during last weekends game against SD Galway. Brian McCarthy who has played in all games previously this season will also miss out due to a one game ban for yellow cards received. Scott Gaynor, Stephen Relihan and Garvan Broughall are all still unavailable while Tommy Barrett announced his retirement from the playing side of the game last weekend taking up a coaching position with Limerick FC.

Ross Kenny is back training after a a knee injury and is pushing for a spot in the starting line up.

New signings Stephen Last and Barry O’Mahoney will also come straight into the squad while a number of other signings are in the pipeline and it is hoped they will go through in time for this weekend’s game.

Kick off in the Flancare Park is scheduled for 7.30pm.

will be a tough task away to the league leaders, but the other games were close enough, after waterford winning tonight we will prob be out of the race for 3rd if dont get something out of this game, COME ON THE TOWN!!!!!!
